There are many preparations that a parent can consider implementing with their preschooler to get him/her ready for Kindergarten. These are some of the suggestions.

1) Read every night, as part of the bedtime routine. - Talk about characters, locate sight words; expose your child to a variety of genres; create a reading log to make it interactive and fun!

2) Writing & spelling skills - Practice writing first and last names; capital and lowercase letters; writing words by "sounding out" the letter sounds; and basic sentence structure.

3) Math skills - Practice counting objects, writing numbers; counting by 5s and 10s; counting to 100; subtracting objects

4) Structure - Establish a daily routine similar to a school day; practice following directions; and working in groups.

5) Social skills - Teach taking turns; playing with others; sharing;  and interaction in playgroup settings.

Enjoy this milestone! It's the start of many in your child's academic career.
